The Gospel According to the Heretic Pelagius

"Humanism, in all its subtle forms, recapitulates the unvarnished Pelagianism against which Augustine struggled. Though Pelagius was condemned as a heretic by Rome, and its modified form, Semi-Pelagianism was likewise condemned by the Council of Orange in 529, the basic assumptions of this view persisted throughout church history to reappear in Medieval Catholicism, Renaissance Humanism, Socinianism, Arminianism, and modern Liberalism. The seminal thought of Pelagius survives today not as a trace or tangential influence but is pervasive in the modern church. Indeed, the modern church is held captive by it."

--- R.C Sproul

You may read this entire article by R.C. intitled Augustine & Pelaguis here at Leadership U.

Here is a great audio follow up to this subject by the folks @ The White Horse Inn...

After reading Sproul's article and listening to the Audio about the Heretic Pelagius. Ask yourself this very question . In all honesty, does my Theology & Doctrine at the core, line up with Pelagius and his "Semi-Pelagianism (Man Centered) view" or with the Bible and its "Christ Centered view"? When I asked myself this question about 4-5 years ago, I found my answer was the Bill-Centered view.

by His Grace alone,

Bill

i'll never forget how, in a particular service, Pelagius was quoted as a GOOD source of doctrine!!

simply incredible!

Yeah I remember you telling me that. Do you suppose the "quoter" would get GOOD doctrine from Joe Smith? Mary Bakker Eddy? L. Ron Hubbard? Oprah? Don't think so! After all their stuff is just as "GOOD" as Pelagius. I'll go one up on your simply incredible. How about simply stupid?

well... they almost did take "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" as such.... written by a mormon ....Steven Covey

Oh wonderful! But then I'm sure they would've said that the book wasn't about mormon doctrine. Just motivational stuff right? I'm surprised he didn't want to use Ken Blanchard's book! Don't know a lot about him,but he was quite popular. Maybe he still is. I hear he endorses a lot of new age junk. Supposedly he professes to be a Christian. He's done "success" seminars with Warren and Hybels. So there you go.

How can one say in good conscience that Pelagius quotes are a good source of doctrine? Unless, one has absolutly not read Pelagius and is repeating something that was said to the particular "quoter".

Can we ever be moral enough to achieve eternal life?

Grace paid for my sins and brought me to life, not my own morality.. My Goodness!

Scott...it was Leadership stuff. and yes the Blanchard stuff was there too. anything that had "leadership" stamped on it, regardless of the source.

Bill...it was out of PURE UNADULTERATED ignorance, trying to appear "studied" by using terms that sound intellectual & historical.

of course when your definition of "study" is to skim a few books, then i guess it would work.

lol

Thanks you for posting this and thanks for your wonderful Christ-centered blog! I love this program by WHI. I thank God for theologians like Sproul and James White and the like who stand up against this heresy. My friend Lane (or better known as LaneCh haha) and I got to visit Sproul's church this past weekend and it was such a blessing to hear that kind of preaching in person. Keep fighting the good fight of faith, brother.

In Christ,
Susan
