here's a solid position to answer both extremes of the issue:
"They have not understood that as God’s good gift, wealth is good in and of itself, and generating wealth is good in and of itself. They have not grasped that wealth and wealth generation are both calling and ministry. Further, they have not recognized the point made with great theological cogency in John Schneider’s The Good of Affluence that bounty for His creation is God’s normative plan for creation. While this view is to be distinguished from the Prosperity Gospel, it is the antithesis of the 'Simple Life' Gospel of Tony Campolo, Ron Sider, Jim Wallis and Brian McLaren."
